英国，不，应该是英国与爱尔兰，盛产抑郁到死的优美民谣男，早的时候有Nick Drake（真的抑郁而死），前些年出了个David Gray，而这两三年又有了Damien Rice、Tom McRae（有段时间我还把这两人弄混了）。
Damien Rice颓废的样子和嗓音，总是让我想起Radiohead的Thom Yorke以及Coldplay的Chris Martin，尤其是他那些突然会变得很摇滚的爆炸力歌曲，就像这两支乐队的轻怡版。通常，一个能一举成名的民谣歌手，很难持续地创作出佳作，我猜是因为民谣这玩意儿实在是太单薄，要么靠优美却变化不大的旋律取胜，要么就是靠歌词，而要想在民谣这种空间很小的音乐中，持续性创作出好又不闷的旋律或好又不闷的歌词，是非常困难的事。所以那些大师级的民谣歌手，往往后来不是求助于爵士（比如Joni Mitchell），就是求助于世界音乐（如Paul Simon），即使几乎是文学大师的Bob Dylan，也不断向蓝调根源靠近。
Damien Rice的上张处男大碟叫做《0》，3年之后的这第2张竟然连跳九级，叫做《9》，这多半跟它的首支单曲《9 Crimes》有关。这是张在大多数时候都优（美）（抑）郁到死的唱片，Damien Rice的演唱非常像他的同乡David Gray，不同的是他更少明亮更多抑郁，有时会让人想起民谣经典大佬的Don McLean（如第2首“Animals Were Gone”），在那些同样抑郁的器乐伴奏（钢琴或吉他为主，偶尔还有专门引人唏嘘的弦乐组）下，Damien Rice低调稀落的歌声无疑是一把专门谋杀感性心灵的匕首，如果按照催泪伤心程度来分级的话，纸巾指数至少可以达到3级。
然而，Damien Rice与David Gray最大的不同就是，他曾经是一支重型独立乐队（据说叫做Juniper）的成员，他的摇滚情结使他拥有更大的能量。“Elephant”就是一首从清唱发展成为摇滚的优郁炸弹，Damien Rice用华丽以至于很有些炫技式的独唱，用长达3分多钟的导火引线来引爆几十秒的高潮，令人动容，让人非常想到Thom Yorke。而在接下来的“Rootless Tree”里，他更是直接地在摇滚乐队之声中狠狠地“Funk you, funk you”，这一招肯定能吸引不少被优美民谣弄得心烦的摇滚男。这种摇滚之声还出现在“Me, My Yoke And I”，而且还相当重型。
这些埋藏在动听叙事曲之间的摇滚炸弹，使这张专辑最终没有变成一张民谣催眠曲，也使得Damien Rice还不至于像David Gray那样很快就成为一闪而过的民谣之星，如果他能够再组建一支摇滚乐队重上沙场的话，想必也可以炸伤不少歌迷。
