美国新灵魂乐歌手John Legend原名John Stephens，“John Legend”这个名字只是儿时朋友们送的绰号。John Legend出生在美国俄亥俄州的Springfield，家庭的音乐氛围对于John Legend日后走向音乐方面产生了重要的作用。John Legend的家里有一台钢琴，John Legend从五岁的时候开始就利用这台钢琴学着练习弹奏歌曲，到了他八九岁的时候就已经开始在当地的一些教堂里为教堂唱诗班弹钢琴伴奏了，通过奶奶教授给他的一些福音音乐歌曲，不久之后John Legend已经开始独立的演奏歌曲了，到了高中的时候，John Legend已经开始录制一些小型唱片了。John Legend后来开始听一些Jodeci，Boyz II Men，LL Cool J的音乐，这些音乐对于他后来的个人音乐风格也产生了一定的影响。16岁以后，John Legend离开了家乡来到了宾夕法尼亚大学主修英文专业，在这里除了学习之外他依然活跃于音乐场合，他经常在学校的一些才艺演出上表演，在费城外的Bethel A.M.E.教堂他已经成为了教堂唱诗班的导演，直到他发片前的几个月，他在这所教堂担任唱诗班导演长达九年。
1998年，John Legend已经开始在Lauryn Hill的《Everything Is Everything》中进行钢琴演奏，不过到2000年以前他主要的演出地点仍然在费城，直到后来他通过到纽约，波士顿，亚特兰大，华盛顿等地一些夜总会的演出而扩大了自己的听众范围，并且灌录一些唱片在演出时出售。通过努力他也渐渐开始和一些R&B艺人一起演出，并且开始在一些艺人的唱片中露面。他的一些现场唱片也引起了著名制作人Kanye West的注意，John Legend大学时的室友和合作者Devo Harris把他引见给了Kanye West，原来Kanye West正是Devo Harris的表亲。Kanye West在看了几场他的表演之后，随即把这位年轻人带到了自己的团队中。到2002年，John Legend已经广泛的开始与Kanye West一起工作，也开始出现在一些大牌明星的专辑中。2003年，John Legend参加了Alicia Keys专辑《Diary Of Alicia Keys》主打单曲《You Don't Know My Name》的录制，又先后参加了Jay-Z《The Black Album》，Black Eyed Peas《Elephunk》，Twista《Kamikaze》等多张畅销专辑的录制，还出现在Janet Jackson，Mary J. Blige等人的单曲录制中。2003年底，Kanye West把表现出色的John Legend正式签入了自己的唱片公司里并且先后于2003年和2004年初发行了他的现场专辑《Live at SOB's New York City》和《Solo Sessions Vol. 1: Live at the Knitting Factory》。随着Kanye West首张个人专辑《College Dropout》的成功，John Legend更是受到了Kanye West的进一步发掘，2004年12月28日，在Kanye West的打造下，John Legend的首张录音室专辑《Get Lifted》正式发行。(CatCobain）
